About Yoga

... a whole new dimension to mind-body work!

How Yoga was Developed

Yoga was developed in India several thousand years ago. It is considered the oldest system of personal development in the world and it aims to balance the body, mind and spirit. Yoga by definition means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as a “union” between the mind and body.

There are six branches of yoga. Hatha Yoga is the branch of yoga with which most of us are familiar. Hatha Yoga refers to a set of physical exercises or poses that is designed to bring the body into a balanced state of health. The ancient practitioners of yoga discovered that one path to the soul was through the body and so they used yoga to purify the body, quiet the mind, and build physical strength and stamina.

Yoga and You

Recent surveys show that more than eleven million Americans practice yoga on a regular basis. People from all walks of life practice yoga because it improves cardiovascular health, increases muscular strength and flexibility, and tunes the organ systems in the body. Yoga improves the body’s ability to relax, and it reduces the effects of stress on the body, which is especially important considering the fast-paced lives that most of us live.

Most Americans are drawn to yoga for its physical benefits. However, yoga is also a powerful tool for self-transformation. A regular practitioner often discovers changes in their overall approach to life. It helps quiet the mind so that one can be more present to the unfolding of each moment.

Core Pilates is interested in helping individuals improve their health and their quality of life by offering well structured yoga classes that are small enough so that instructors can work with participants' individual needs. We offer three types of yoga including, Beginner Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Yoga .Beginner Yoga is the point of entry for newcomers offering a detailed overview of principles, breath and postures. Hatha Yoga focuses on body alignment and posture details while still focusing on technique, strength and flexibility goals. It is a class geared towards beginning and continuing yoga students. Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a more challenging class combining breath with movement. This class offers the same attention to form and alignment but adds the additional element of breath. The Vinyasa Flow class is designed for students with some knowledge of yoga.

How Do Pilates and Yoga Differ?

Pilates and yoga complement each other and bring out the “yin and yang” in mind-body work. They are equally focused on energizing, stretching and strengthening the body, yet Pilates works from the core of the body outward, and yoga works from the outer body inward. Pilates is very dynamic and fluid, and yoga has a more introspective search for stillness amidst movement.

Pilates and yoga are both relaxing forms of movement, but yoga has greater emphasis on internal peacefulness. Pilates builds core strength and improves body awareness, enhancing one's practice of yoga or level of fitness. Yoga strengthens and centers the entire body which fosters a more holistic approach that benefits the Pilates enthusiast or anyone!
